History in Africa Diplomacy

In early August 1972, the President of Uganda, Idi Amin, ordered the expulsion of Asian minority living in his country, giving them 90 days to leave the country

At the time of the expulsion, there were approximately 80,000 individuals of South Asian descent mostly Gujaratis in Uganda.

Despite the fact that 23,000 Asians had their applications for citizenship both processed and accepted, many of them left the country

President Idi Amin accused the minority of the Asian population of disloyalty, non-integration and commercial malpractice.

Amin defended the expulsion by arguing that he was “giving Uganda back to ethnic Ugandans

The expellees eventually became refugee in United Kingdom, Canada, India and nearby Kenya.
